Everton secured a famous Merseyside derby win to compound Liverpool’s recent misery at Anfield this evening.
The Toffees went took an early lead through Richarlison after a lovely pass from James Rodriguez, before Liverpool lost captain Jordan Henderson to injury midway through the first-half.
The visitors had goalkeeper Jordan Pickford to thank for preserving the lead on numerous occasions, the England No1 making key saves to deny both Henderson and Mo Salah.
Substitute Dominic Calvert-Lewin almost sealed the win on the counter-attack, only to be denied by Alisson, but Trent Alexander-Arnold was adjudged to have fouled the Everton striker as he went for the rebound and the away side were awarded the chance to seal it from the spot.
Gyfli Sigurdsson stepped up to find the corner and seal the three points which move Everton level with their rivals, having played one game fewer.
More importantly, the result marked Everton’s first win at Anfield since 1999 and condemned Liverpool to four straight home defeats for the first time in almost a century.
FULL-TIME | Liverpool 0-2 Everton
The drought is no more. Everton have their first Anfield win of the century.
90+2 mins: With five minutes of added time, a Liverpool goal could still make things nervy, so it’s just as well that Jordan Pickford makes another outstanding save to tip Wijnaldum’s effort over the bar.
90 mins: What now for Liverpool?
This is going to be a fourth-straight home defeat and a fourth-straight league defeat. The most painful one yet?
GOAL! | Liverpool 0-2 Everton | Gylfi Sigurdsson 83’
Just, just! The Icelandic international drags his low effort accurately enough to beat the dive of Alisson, despite a real lack of power.
81 mins: Penalty to Everton!
Everton break with Richarlison and Calvert-Lewin is steaming up to join him. The Brazillian finds him and Calvert-Lewin’s strikes is saved by Alisson.
Alexander-Arnold slides in and doesn’t actually foul the striker with his tackle – but Calvert-Lewin is obstructed by the defender’s follow-through as he tries to get to the ball to tap-in the rebound.
76 mins: I wouldn’t call it time wasting just yet, but Everton are not showing much ambition at the moment. They’re very close to a famous win.
70 mins: Another big, big save from Jordan Pickford. Mo Salah finds himself in on goal after a sharp exchange but the England No1 is out so quickly and stands up to keep him out.
65 mins: Getting closer. Mane slips Alexander-Arnold in down the right and the full-back crashes low across the face of goal but no one can apply the finishing touch.
63 mins: Yep, Calvert-Lewin is on, with James Rodriguez the man to make way.
60 mins: Everton have sent Gylfi Sigurdsson on in place of Gomes to try and get a foothold in the game in this half. I don’t think Calvert-Lewin is far away either.
